Basic Guide to Bug-Out Bags

Your bug-out bag is your lifeline in the event of a disaster. It’s one of the things that you have the most control over. The size. The contents. The shape. It’s all up to you. And it’s the one thing that can increase your chances of survival by ensuring that you have the supplies to get where you need to be, no matter the disaster.

What is a Bug-Out Bag (B0B)?

A bug-out bag (BOB) is a portable kit designed to provide a person with essential supplies to evacuate in the event of an emergency or disaster, such as a natural disaster, societal collapse, or other life-threatening situation. It doesn’t have to be a large kit, but it will need to be big enough to contain your essentials. Whatever you decide to put in your kit is up to you, but here are some of the basics that we recommend you include in your bug-out bag:

Food

You don’t need a ton of food, but you should have enough to last you 72-hours. Everything that you pack should be non-perishable – or at least have a long shelf-life – high-calorie food items such as energy bars, dried fruits, nuts, and jerky.

Water

A minimum of three days’ worth of water, either in bottles or in a water filtration system.

Shelter

A tent, tarp, or other type of shelter to protect from the elements.

Clothing

Extra clothing appropriate for the climate and weather, including a warm hat, gloves, and waterproof gear.

First-aid kit

A comprehensive first-aid kit that includes pain relievers, bandages, antiseptics, and any necessary prescription medications.

Navigation

A map, compass, or GPS device, as well as a whistle and signaling device.

Light

A flashlight with extra batteries, a headlamp, or other portable light source.

Fire

Matches, a lighter, or a firestarter to make a fire for warmth and cooking.

Tools

A multi-tool, knife, or other cutting tool, as well as a basic repair kit for gear.

Money

Cash in small denominations and any necessary identification documents, such as a passport or driver’s license.

Hygiene

Toothbrush, toothpaste, wet wipes, and other items to maintain personal hygiene.

Communication

A two-way radio, satellite phone, or other means of communication.

Remember, the contents of your bug-out bag will depend on your individual needs and the type of emergency you are preparing for. It is important to customize your bag based on your specific situation and needs.
